Interview with Nancy Josephson from The Angel Band

June 5, 2008
by Scott Preston

Angel Band makes big noise. Loud noise. Boisterous, sad, sweet, goofy, glorious and angelic. Any which way you look at it this stuff gets your attention. Whether it’s the crazy tight three part harmony, the killer backup playing, the stories, the passion or the compassion, it gets your attention. The songs on this album are mostly self-penned, weaving vivid images, powerful lyrics, musical integrity and “chops” to write home about. The core of the band is held by the three singers: Nancy Josephson, Jen Schonwald and Kathleen Weber. All are experienced on lead and backup vocals. The love of the sound that three female voices make together is at the center of this group. The chord rules the day. Both mystical and elemental when the three hit “it” the hair on the back of your neck’s gonna stand up.

"We Are Shepherds"
words by Nancy Josephson
music by Bob Tangrea and Nancy Josephson
performed by Angel Band

The song, we are Shepherds, was written while reflecting on what is going on in the world today and specifically how this country is responding to its place in the world. The decisions the administration is making regarding Iraq has made me feel both helpless and pissed off. I wanted to write a piece that wasn't a strident kicking and screaming administration bash, but a deeper, more elemental gut-deep cry of commitment about what my ultimate job as a mother is. This song is about not only my being a mother to my own children, but my job as a mother to my friend's children, and, by extension all children. "We won't give you our children". Our job as moms and dads is about keeping our children safe and out of the hands of those who may use our kids as fodder in wars built on lies.

I hate that this needed to be written. I am, though, thankful that it has hit a chord with those who have heard us singing this in concert. If nothing else the song gives voice to what many are feeling...disgusted.

HONEST AMERICANA: BROMBERG, ROWAN & RICE
Words by: John Waldman
JamBase
David Bromberg with Peter Rowan & Tony Rice
01.11.07 :: Palace of Fine Arts :: San Francisco, CA

Warming things up on this cool Bay Area night was The Angel Band. The Angels are fronted by three female vocalists - Nancy Josephson (David Bromberg's wife), Jen Schoenwald and Kathleen Weber. Backing them were Bromberg (guitar, fiddle, vox) and his touring band, Jeff Wisor (fiddle), Bobby Tangrea (guitar, mandolin, fiddle) and Bob Taylor (bass). They feature soaring, three-part harmonies and, of course, hot pickin' by the band. They did several gorgeous numbers, their voices blending perfectly. They carried an "angel" theme through the set, including a nice cover of "Angel of the Morning."   Click here for more of the article.

Bromberg, Angel Band: heavenly harmonies
Thursday, December 07, 2006

David Bromberg was the star Wednesday night at the Palace Theatre. He ably showed off his big, deep voice, an embracing sense of humor and guitar skills that earned him the key spot in the studio for hundreds of important American recording sessions.

But the best times came when the members of the Angel Band joined their three beautiful voices with his wondrous work.

It wasn't your regular, old one-band-opens-and-the-headliner-follows. Thankfully.

The Angel Band took the stage first. The three grand voices of Nancy Josephson, Jen Schonwald and Kathleen Weber, making her debut as part of the trio, filled the old movie theater from top to bottom, gorgeously thrilling the crowd that smartly got there in time.

Then their backup band marched on, and it was Bromberg himself on guitar, with his current band: Bobby Tangrea on mandolin, Butch Amiot on bass and Jeff Wisor on fiddle.

The onstage chemistry made them all sizzle, and not just because Josephson happens to be Bromberg's wife, too.

This cast was touched by the special kind of magic that makes a night of music memorable. Josephson shined in the role as leader, charming the crowd with her comments as well as with her vocals.

She told the crowd of how the Angel band recently sang backup to Linda Ronstadt. But with a three-to-one advantage, the band hijacked the song away from the star.
