Bryn Bright
A native of Livermore,
CA, Bryn Bright was born into a talented family of
accomplished musicians. Learning to play piano at the tender age
of three at the behest of her parents, she also studied violin, cello
and French horn before settling into the bass at the age of
fourteen. Playing bass in the high school jazz band led to her
competition at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival in 1994, where she walked
away with the Best Bassist award, which included a scholarship to the
renowned Berklee College of Music.
Bryn majored in
Jazz Performance at Berklee and pursued her love of big band music
playing with jazz band Back Bay Brass. A precipitous meeting with
fellow student and mandolinist Billy Bright guided her first foray
into bluegrass music, with an introduction via genre-defining
recordings by the Tony Rice Unit and supergroup Old & In The Way.
This collaboration between Bryn and Billy was the start of her
immersion into the world of acoustic music and that high, lonesome
sound and culminated in the formation of the Two High String Band, a
five-piece neo-traditionalist bluegrass group.
Two High String
Band relocated to Austin, TX in 1997, where Bryn met bluegrass legend
Peter Rowan, and began performing as the bassist in Rowan's Texas
Trio in 1999. She is currently a member of the Peter Rowan
& Tony Rice Quartet, and touring in support of their
new Rounder CD, which she appeared on as well. Bryn is also
forming a stellar band of ace young pickers in a contemporary
bluegrass context for select performances that showcase her reverence
for traditional bluegrass in combination with the jazz-inflected
influences of her training.
Bryn
Bright’s burgeoning career in bluegrass music includes performances
with both its established and new-grass stars such as Sam Bush, Bela
Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Shawn Camp and Jim Lauderdale. In addition, her
notable success has come full circle recently: First
exposed to the genre by Old & In The Way and Tony Rice Unit, in
2002 she filled the shoes of the illustrious John Kahn in the revived
Old & In The Way (renamed as Old & In The Gray), for a reunion
CD and tour; and as of 2004, she signed on as the bass player in the
Tony Rice Unit.
